The Overview of Zbrush:
Maxon ZBrush is a digital sculpting tool that combines 3D and 2.5D modeling, texturing, and painting. It utilizes a proprietary "pixol" technology, which stores information on lighting, color, material, orientation, and depth for the points that make up all objects on the screen. ZBrush shares similarities with traditional sculpting techniques.
ZBrush is renowned for creating high-resolution models, often exceeding 40 million polygons, which are used in movies, games, and animations by companies like Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Weta Digital, Epic Games, and Electronic Arts. It employs dynamic resolution levels, allowing sculptors to make both global and local changes to their models. ZBrush excels at sculpting medium- to high-frequency details traditionally painted in bump maps. These details can be exported as normal maps for use on low poly versions of the model or as displacement maps, although this requires a higher resolution for the low poly version. Once a 3D model is complete, it can be projected onto the background as a 2.5D image, enabling further effects. This feature allows users to work within complex scenes without significant processor overhead.
ZBrush was developed by Pixologic Inc., founded by Ofer Alon (alias "Pixolator") and Jack Rimokh. The software was first presented at SIGGRAPH in 1999. A demo version, 1.55, was released in 2003, followed by version 3.1 in 2007. ZBrush 4 for Windows and Mac was announced on April 21, 2009, for an August release, but it was postponed. Instead, version 3.5 was released in September 2009, including features initially intended for ZBrush 4.
Starting with Version 4, ZBrush introduced GoZ, facilitating integration with other 3D graphics programs like Autodesk Maya, Autodesk 3ds Max, Cinema 4D, LightWave 3D, Poser Pro, Daz Studio, EIAS, Modo, and Blender.
In January 2022, Maxon acquired ZBrush, integrating it into the Maxon One subscription service. The Redshift renderer was also integrated into ZBrush, enhancing its capabilities further.
